HERON HAVEN NATURE CENTER
11809 Old Maple Rd., Omaha, NE. 68164
The Speakers Bureau of Heron Haven Environmental Education Center has programs available for presentations at our Heron Haven Center: 11809 Old Maple Rd.
Educational Field Trips to Heron Haven
Heron Haven is a unique wetland sanctuary, which is owned by the Papio-Missouri NRD and managed by the non-profit Friends of Heron Haven, Incorporated. It is staffed entirely by volunteers. Heron Haven offers FREE (we do accept donations) daily trail (sunrise to sunset) access to individuals and groups. It has a butterfly and native grass garden, forest trail and a spacious, well-equipped Nature Center.
In order to encourage Metro schools and Home Schools to use Heron Haven as a site for meaningful and hands-on wetland and ecological education you can choose from the following:
______E-mail (dmledoux@gmail.com ) to schedule a GUIDED visit preferably on Tuesdays from 9- 5PM. These will be 1 to 2 hours to include a hike and nature activities by trained Master Naturalists and other volunteers. Please fill out the linked Heron Haven Fieldtrip form and send to my e-mail.
______We have 6 FREE bus trips available for this school year for OPS schools that could not come otherwise. However we ask that before you call to schedule this field trip, (On a Tuesday) to be able to summit in writing answers to these 3 Questions: What do you expect your children to learn from their Heron Haven field trip? How will you use your visit to Heron Haven in your curriculum? How will you be able to document and show us that your children have retained or used their wetland or nature knowledge somewhere else in your curriculum?
______Teacher Orientation -We will be offering 1 Hour orientation visits to any teachers and staff in the Metro area or Home School Parents who would like to use Heron Haven on their own, as opposed to relying on our limited staff of volunteers and once a month tour time. Our hope is that this will open the door for more opportunities for Heron Haven to be used as an engaging teaching tool for its significant ecological values in our children’s community. Once you have been oriented you may email ( dmledoux@gmail.com) to let Heron Haven know your class or group is coming just to avoid more than one large group visiting the wetlands at a time.
______Don’t need an orientation but want to visit with a large group (Over 12 people)? E-mail Diane at ( dmledoux@gmail.com ) to let us know you will be visiting the wetlands on what date, time and for how long. We will note this on a calendar in the hopes that not more than one school or other large group is visiting any day. We ask that you respect the wetlands and animals living there by trying to visit in small groups.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN HERON HAVEN!
