Boardwalk — You may walk out to the center of the wetland on the boardwalk. Watch for the Kingfisher who often perches on the railing or in nearby trees. He is bluish in color, about a foot long, and has a shaggy crest on his head. He often leaves fish scales on the railing from his meals. Turtles may be sunning themselves on the logs here and many other places in the wetland. If the water looks stirred up, it is caused by the movement of very large Carp in the shallow water. Sometimes you will see them flip out of the water or swim along with a bit of their head or dorsal fin above water. Often the noise from nearby Maple Road traffic is loud but the wildlife have grown accustomed to it. Looking toward Maple Road you will see birdhouses high in the trees over the water. These are Wood Duck houses; when babies are born they remain in the house until they are developed enough to swim and then jump from the house down to the water and swim away.
